I know otters have made a big comeback in recent years but what is it with these poxy cormorants? You wouldn't see a cormorant in fresh water where I live twenty years ago and I live on the coast, now they are on most still waters around here, they can devastate stocks of silver fish.

Never seen an otter at work.
They tend to like an over-stocked stretch of river, mind you.

I am in North Bucks now and whilst they are an issue, otters have ruined waters around here - Hyde Lane lakes have lost their big native carp and The Twins, on the upper Great Ouse behind them, their big perch numbers. that was the very stretch that was breaking the record every other week a while back, no more, sadly.

There's a tiny river in Hornchurch called the ingrebourne. Opposite the optimist pub you can catch 2-3lb chub amongst the minnows etc.. Even had a 3lb plus perch there! It runs right down to the Thames at rainham.. Had some decent chub and roach by the bridge at tescos opposite side of road to the Albion pub. Cormorants mainly stripped the docks, lee system and London canals.

I meant the Wye here - see that in flood and it is a different thing, plod arrived asking if we saw a tractor go through once, farmer driving it was found in Hay on Wye miles downstream. That bridge gets closed to being beneath the river. Proper river the Wye.

I agree mate, if you can fish a big river, and read the beast you can fish anywhere
That said, apply that knoweledge to a small overgrown stream and you will be shocked at what you catch. With the puddle addiction you referred to, many are left completely - get in there before the otters and black death comorants completely fuck it all for ever

Several lifetimes mate to be precise - I would be happy just to see one
Mind you, saw barbel in the Royalty about 20 years ago, looking down into the compound weir, behind the chain, at the top of the parlour pool if you know it, that were enormous - 4 of us saw 3 fish rise to the surface, progressively bigger. The first had a head like a greyhound size, the biggest, well lets just say it looked like a Russian sub
I wont say what weight we estimated them at for fear of ridicule but they were huge and we know our doubles, talking to John Bailey later, he was aware and he too had seen them and discussed with salmon anglers the 'pest' fish taken there to game rigs and found dead on the bank in winter
Love a huge fish tale

Had a 1.8lb roach out of the Thames at Goring on a float rig. Thought I'd snagged on strike until the line was almost in the snag-zone on my bank side.
Clever sod, though I still landed the beauty.

Not many places you can get a roach of that size, maybe up on the broads (yare or wensum) and down on the Kentish stour around plucks gutter or grove ferry? Think I must dust off the old pin this winter and have a few days out..

Chub every day, long trot on a hand made balsa off a pin coupled with my beloved Hexagraph 1 1/4lb test
Only beaten by barbel, touch ledgered cheese paste or from bounced meat down a big boy's river like teh Wye - Stret Pegging if you know it?
Closest to that enjoyment is the classic tench lift bite method in late June from a natural or established estate lake, laid on corn as the sun rises, bliss
Drop shotting for big perch on the Thames is my current thing with lobs - worth trying if you have never before
Of carp, well I hear the latest madnes is the use of drones, ffs I feel old, I would want to down the fucker with a blast from the 'pult

An old syndicate of mine called mercers park did a shitload of 7-8lbers. I had a few on 20 mm boilies. 4.5oz leads. Not the same as a stream but still nice to catch,
